Block Parents- Volunteers needed - City of Barrie

http://www.blockparent.on.ca

Block Parents is holding a meeting on Tues Nov 18th @ 7:45 pm.  They are seeking volunteers, so that they can continue running this program in Barrie. Anyone interested is welcome to come.  It will be held at the Barrie Police Dept - 60 bell Farm Road - Near St. Vincent and Cundles.   If you've been reading the paper lately, there has been talk of the Block Parents program pulling out of Barrie due to a lack of participants in the area.    The following is a letter that I had sent to the Barrie Advance, which was published recently in the "Letters to the Editor" section: Folding of Block Parent Program in Barrie, Ontario (appeal to the public) Copy sent to:     lauriemelcher@shaw.ca ,  mrooke@blockparent.on.ca ,  info@blockparent.ca , Barrie advance (Letters to the Editor) and Barrie Examiner – Letters to the Editor   From:    Michael Espey    Barrie ON    Re:         Folding of Block Parent Program in Barrie, Ontario (appeal to the public)  I read with sheer horror that after more than 20 years of providing safety for children, the Barrie Chapter of the Block Parents' Program is pulling out.  With an increase in bullying in recent years and other concerns, this is an absolute tragedy.  I am not part of the Program, nor was I aware that there was an urgent need for people to participate, however, I am a parent and would be willing to do my part to get the program running again. When I was a child, I recall seeing signs on streets and on people's front windows.  I never went to a Block Parent for help, but I would have if I were in need. I urge all parents, both young and old, to get involved and not let this essential safety net be swept under the rug forever.  If you have children, grandchildren or even if you would just like to help out, please contact the Block Parents (http://www.blockparent.on.ca or www.blockparent.ca) by email at info@blockparent.ca or call them at 705-792-4245.  I for one will be contacting them, as well as forwarding this letter to them. I would like to know why the program is pulling out without an appeal to the public.  If the program was looking to recruit people, I heard nothing about it.  If I had, I most certainly would have applied.   For the sake of a valuable service like Block Parents, I believe that the Advance or any of the dailies could run an article detailing the imminent collapse of the program if the public don't rally to support it.  My appeal to Barrie:  Please get involved.  If you are in a position to spread the word, please do.  The future of your child may depend on it.

Help Foster Kids Voices Be Heard

The Foster Care Council of Canada is a fledgling, Ottawa based, online, non-profit organization which is made up of current and former child-welfare clients and their supporters, whose goal is to improve the quality of service and accountability of child-welfare services in Canada.   As such, we are currently seeking an individual who has had experience in organizing a group of people into an organization.   At this time we wish to remain fairly casual without lawyers and professionals and consultants until the need arises.   We do however require someone to meet regularly with the Executive Director either by phone, electronically (MSN, Skype, E-Mail, Yahoo Messenger etc) or in person in the west end of Ottawa (Nepean) to keep things on track and progressing in the right direction.   If you have an understanding of Board meetings, organizational structure (small) and steering committee experience, and you are available for discussion or meetings online or in person during the days, please get in touch with our Founder and volunteer Executive Director, John Dunn at 613-228-2178. Feel free to leave a message with your contact information if you get a machine.
